John The Baptist was a Jewish itinerant preacher in the early first century AD.  John proclaims baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sin, and says another will come after him who will not baptize with water, but with the Holy Spirit.  Jesus came to John, and was baptized by him in the river Jordan.  The account in the Gospel of Mark describes how, as he emerges from the water, the heavens open and the Holy Spirit descends on him 'like a dove'.

John was later imprisoned by Herod Antipas and beheaded.
