St. Matthew (also known as Matthew the Apostle) was one of the twelve apostles of Jesus and one of the four Evangelists.  He worked as a tax collector before he began following Jesus.  St. Matthew was one of the witnesses of the Resurrection and the Ascension of Jesus.
